Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has dismissed the US peace plan for Middle East saying it is in breach of United Nations resolutions and Palestinian sovereignty.
Speaking at the UN Security Council, he said Trump plan cannot achieve peace and security as it cancels international legitimacy.
Mahmood Abbas said it cancels all the rights of the Palestinians and does not meet the aspirations of a two-state solution.
Meanwhile, briefing the Security Council, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov also called for ways to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to negotiations.
He said the U.S. proposal has been rejected by the Palestinian government, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Mladenov asked the Security Council to join the UN secretary-general’s call for a negotiated solution to the conflict.
On the other side, Members of the European Parliament have voiced harsh criticism for the so-called U.S. Middle East ‘peace’ plan.
During a plenary session of the parliament, the majority of EU lawmakers agreed U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan goes against international law and is biased towards Israel.
Addressing to session, EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrellsaid the proposal clearly challenges the internationally agreed parameters of a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He said most EU member states did not even consider the plan a good starting point.
Other speakers including representatives of Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Slovenia and Turkey also criticized the US Middle East ‘peace’ plan. The European Union Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss the U.S. Middle East peace plan at meeting in Brussels next Monday. U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo has invited to join the debate.
